Is Your Furnace Drying Out Your Home? A Whole-Home Humidifier Helps

Most homes here in Elyria and on Cleveland’s West Side are dry in the winter, from November to March, because cold outdoor air holds very little water.
When you turn on your furnace, it heats that dry air and your indoor humidity can drop below 20%.
Most homes feel comfortable at about 40%.
A whole-home humidifier keeps your home at that level all winter.
Signs your home is too dry:
Dry nose, throat or skin in the morning
Carrying water to a portable humidifier every day: Portables run through their water fast when the air is this dry.
A whole-home unit can solve this problem. It fills itself from your water line, so you don’t have to refill your humidifier every day.
Gaps in your hardwood floors: Dry air draws the moisture out of wood, and the wood shrinks. Your floorboards and trim have a higher tendency to crack in winter.
A whole-home humidifier adds moisture back, so the wood is less dry and the gaps stay smaller.
Home feels cold even when the temperature is set: Dry air causes heat to evaporate from your skin quickly, so you might feel colder than usual even though the thermostat is set to 68.
A whole-home humidifier solves this by adding moisture back into your home.
How a Whole-Home Humidifier Works With Your Furnace
We install a whole-home humidifier right on the ductwork by your furnace. We pipe a water line to it, run a drain line, and wire it to your furnace so it only runs when your heat is on.
Each time the heat turns on, warm air from the furnace blows through a water pad inside the humidifier (a panel that soaks up water) and carries moisture to the vents in every room.
It’s low maintenance. Unlike a portable, you don’t need to keep filling it with water, because it’s connected to a pipe.
You don’t need a new furnace to get a whole-home humidifier. We can add one to an existing furnace, or fit one in a new furnace install.

Add a Whole-Home Air Cleaner on the Same Visit
Want to improve air quality in your home? An air cleaner fits on the furnace too, so we can put in the air cleaner and the humidifier on the same visit.
We install AprilAire and Clean Comfort air cleaners. The Clean Comfort filter only needs changing once or twice a year, depending on how much your fan runs. A standard thin filter needs changing every few months.

Whole-Home Humidifier FAQs
Will a whole-home humidifier cause mold or wet windows?
No, not when it’s set right and the water pad is changed every year. The water pad is the panel inside the humidifier that soaks up water for the furnace air to pick up.
The problems start when you turn your humidifier to its “high” setting all winter, which causes excess moisture in your home.
An old pad causes problems too, because minerals and grime build up on it when it isn’t changed for years.
If you see fog or frost on the inside of your windows, the humidity setting is too high.
What should I set my humidifier to?
For most homes, 40% is the optimal setting. You can lower the setting on colder nights.
Some humidifiers have an automatic setting that adjusts the humidity for you.
How much maintenance does a whole-home humidifier need?
Whole-home humidifiers are easy to maintain, and only need a few simple steps:
Change the water pad once a year. It’s the panel inside the humidifier that soaks up water, and the warm air from your furnace blows through it to pick up moisture.
If you have hard water, minerals build up on it sooner and you may need a new one before the year is out.
- Shut it off in spring, so it isn’t running with your AC, then turn it back on in the fall.
Why is my home still dry with a whole-home humidifier?
Common issues with whole-home humidifiers include:
- Incorrect sizing: a small humidifier can’t keep up with a larger home, so choosing the right size is important. When you schedule an in-home visit with us, we size your humidifier to your home.
- Incorrect installation: the water line was never connected, the water pad is missing, or the damper (the small door that lets furnace air into the humidifier) was left closed, so no air reaches the pad.
Can I use a whole-home humidifier with a heat pump?
Yes, though the usual kind, with a water pad, won’t add as much moisture.
Air from your heat pump comes out cooler than air from your furnace, and cooler air picks up less water as it blows through the pad.
A steam humidifier is also a whole-home humidifier and goes on your ductwork the same way, but it heats water into steam and puts the steam straight into the air in your ducts.
Because it makes its own steam, it adds the same amount of moisture however warm the air is. That’s why, with a heat pump, a steam humidifier is the better choice.
