Can a mini-split heat my home in a Northeast Ohio winter?
Mostly, as long as you keep another heat source for the coldest days. A mini-split is a heat pump, so most models heat as well as cool. Cold-climate models are built to keep heating in low temperatures. They still put out less heat as it gets colder, and use more power to do it. That’s why many Ohio homes keep their furnace, boiler or baseboard heat as backup.
On a cold day you might see the outdoor unit stop and give off steam for a few minutes. That’s it melting frost off its coil, which is normal. Snow piled against a unit on the ground blocks its air and the water it drains, so it’s best set up on a stand or bracket above the drifts. What goes into the price of a mini-split install?
The unit is only part of it. The rest is the work to mount it, run the lines and wire it, and that changes from house to house. The main things that move the price:
- The number of indoor units, called heads, plus how many outdoor units the house needs.
- The distance from the outdoor unit to each room, and the route the refrigerant lines take through walls, attics or the basement.
- The electrical work. The outdoor unit usually needs its own circuit and a disconnect switch beside it, so its power can be shut off right there.
- The style of indoor unit: wall-mounted, a ceiling cassette or a small ducted unit.

How many indoor units do I need?
It depends on your floor plan. A room with its own door usually needs its own head, because air from one head doesn’t get past a shut door. That’s why older homes with lots of small, closed-off rooms tend to need more heads. Several heads can run off one outdoor unit, so more heads doesn’t always mean more units outside.
A bigger head isn’t a better one. An oversized one cools the room in a hurry and shuts off, over and over. It never runs long enough to dry the air, so the room ends up cool and clammy. Call us and we’ll help you work out which rooms need their own head.
Will a mini-split make my electric bill go up?
That depends on what it takes over from. Cooling a room with a mini-split usually takes less electricity than running window units in it. As a heater, it often costs less to run than electric baseboards.
Natural gas is the exception. Gas is cheap in Ohio, so heat from gas usually costs less than heat from electricity. How big the gap is depends on your gas and electric rates. Give us a call and we’ll go over what it means for your bill.
